PE, school sport and physical activity (PESPA) has always been important to aiding child development and improving pupils physical and mental wellbeing, but it’s only since 2012 that we are starting to see increased momentum in increasing PESPA’s profile within the school setting.
Health and wellbeing provision is being actively promoted in schools, and government schemes are being established to help support physical activity (i.e. sugar-tax levy funding, childhood obesity plan, confirmation of sport premium for until 2025), which provides an opportunity for schools to draw on further resources to help make a positive difference.
This, along with the negative impact brought on by increased sedentary levels increased as a result of Covid and lockdown, means the passion and knowledge sport coaches can bring to the table is more important than ever.
So, if you’re passionate about being a part of the change and continuing to improve PESPA for children within schools, then here’s 5 reasons why you should consider a career in sport coaching or sport education:
- Sport coaches and educators can be a catalyst in helping pupils form positive associations with physical activity and provides the foundation to creating lifelong healthy habits.
- Many who go into this career are passionate about sports or physical activity in their own lives, and may have thrived in this setting compared to more academic subjects at school. You can help create that similar environment for pupils who are less academic and encourage them to achieve success and explore talents they may not necessarily know they have.
- Being a sport coach will directly support a pupils physical, mental and social wellbeing by promoting values such as teamwork, cooperation and communication.
- There’s no better feeling than watching pupils progress and grow whilst celebrating in their successes… in what other subject can you cheer as loud as you can when someone learns something new?!
- The set up of CIMSPA means the industry is only going to get bigger, better and more valued as a career path. Help shape the future of the industry by becoming a coach today!
