Green 360: Introducing our Green Strategy

The world around us is changing, and it has been for some time. In fact, the Climate Reality Project recently identified 5 key eye opening (albeit terrifying) facts about the current climate crisis. The good news? Together, we can make a real positive change….one little bit at a time!

A great example of people coming together to make a change is Earth Day – an annual global event on April 22 that is held to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. First starting on April 22, 1970, over 1 billion people now support the initiative in more than 193 countries.

And on Earth Day 2022…ActiveMe 360 is going green.

Joining the worldwide movement and developing a green strategy is a long process and not one that can be implemented over night – but we knew from the beginning that it would be crucial for us to start as soon as possible. The world won’t wait, so neither would we. But what can we, as small social enterprise in the south of England, really do?

Read on to find out!

ActiveMe 360 are going green…but what does this mean?

We’re developing a green strategy to do our part – starting with phase 1: Carbon neutral travel.

Being a part of a service led industry means our team travel far and wide to continue our mission. It’s a part of the job that we love as it means meeting new people and working in new communities to improve the physical, mental and social health and wellbeing of children and young people.

But it also means our travel carbon footprint can get pretty big. So, even though we’re launching on April 22nd, we actually started tracking our mileage from January 1st and every month, the team will record their miles. Every quarter, ActiveMe 360 will then purchase the relevant number of trees with fellow social enterprise and environmental organisation, Ecologi, to offset this carbon footprint.

That’s great, but who are Ecologi?

Ecologi are a Bristol based company that have planted over 25 million trees and funded some of the best gold standard carbon reduction projects that are able to evidence that they are reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Like us, they’re a social enterprise who are committed to investing 85% of funds received directly into these climate saving projects. The remaining 15% going directly into operational costs. They were created with people like you and me in mind, to give us a way of directly taking on the climate crisis.

Cool, they sound great, but how come ActiveMe 360 are investing in planting trees?

It’s now common knowledge that one of the best ways to tackle the climate crisis and keep our temperatures from rising above 1.5C, is to plant trees.

For example, for every tonne of carbon dioxide omitted, 42 trees are needed to offset the co2 produced. Ecologi also only partner with tree-planting organisations who practise responsible forestry, with the minimisation of forest fire risk in mind, and all trees planted are varied and of native species which means not only does the planet benefit, but the wildlife do too!

Great stuff…but is this all ActiveMe 360 will do?

This is just phase 1 of our green strategy. Each year we will review how we’re currently running, what we can do to improve and the impact it has on our wider planet. We have a tree tracker available on our website so you can regularly check in to see how we’re doing with our carbon offset mission.

Throughout the year we will also be running special green events and promotions, where we will look to engage the ActiveMe community in going green.

Until next year, we’ll continue planting trees and making small daily changes like working with eco aware energy providers, turning off lights in rooms no one is in, walking where we can and reducing our paper use.

I feel inspired. I want to tackle the climate crisis!

There are so many ways you can help do your part. If you want to find out more about Ecologi and how your school or business can get involved, then you can visit their website. You can also visit the Earth Day website to discover other ‘Acts of Green’ you can support, join or donate to.

What next?

Our dedicated web page will host all things ‘Green 360: Our Green Strategy’, including a live ‘tree’s planted’ tracker! We will also continue to update our partners via email and our social media channels on our progress…So make sure you’re following us!
