Important updates around PE & School Sport Premium

Industry

Today (8th March, 2023), The Department for Education (DfE) announced that the PESS Premium Fund (over £600m) will continue for the next two academic years. This confirmed funding ensures schools across the country can continue to raise the profile of PE and invest in much-needed provision to help encourage children to lead healthy and active lifestyles.

Alongside this, the DfE and No.10 Downing Street will also be announcing a new initiative to level up girls’ access to sport and a call-to-action for schools to offer two hours of PE each week for their children.

In addition to the above, the following funding announcements are also expected to be made:

  • School Games / School Games Organisers: The DfE will confirm £22m funding over two years for the continuation of the school games programme, enabling children up and down the country to continue to access the School Games programme and try new sports and activities, developing their physical literacy and building new habits. This announcement will also include an expansion of the School Games mark.
  • Opening School Facilities: The DfE will also be announcing a £57m fund to improve accessibility to school facilities. This national programme will mean that communities and children will be able to access high-quality physical activities at affordable rates during out of school times.
