The impact
A six-week study conducted by academics from Leeds Beckett University has concluded that the MOTM programme both improves maths attainment and increases physical activity levels. Research also suggests that active learning approaches, such as those used in Maths on the Move, lead to increased student motivation in mathematics.
Overview
By offering an alternative approach to curriculum learning, schools can meet children where they are in their learning journey, especially those who struggle to learn in a traditional classroom setting. Research (above) shows that integrating active learning into the school day can make maths lessons more engaging and support a more dynamic learning environment.
Teachers and school leaders are actively involved in shaping and adopting the programme to best fit their pupils’ needs by selecting the modules to suit their children’s needs.

Each Maths on the Move session follows a consistent structure that allows pupils to apply learning, track progress and build confidence over time.
- Schools select bespoke maths booklets aligned to pupils’ current learning during the 12-week programme.
- At the start of each session, pupils complete five short questions to assess understanding.
- Pupils then apply the learning through structured physical activity, using real-life scenarios with the support of our educator.
- Sessions conclude with a further five questions to reinforce learning and track progress.
- Pupil improvement is monitored through termly impact reports.
Schools can choose to begin with a one-day taster session or a 12-week trial, with no obligation to continue if the programme is not the right fit.
