Overview

Sport with Support is a girls only community session that takes place every Friday, during the school term.

Based at YMCA Newton, the sessions were created to provide a safe and accessible environment for females aged 10-19 to continue participating in sports and stay physically active. Each session is free to attend and is delivered by female only coaches.

With a range of fun activities, it’s the perfect way to stay active, make friends, and build confidence!

Zarka's Story

At the age of 16, Zarka started her journey at The Agency (Through Energise Me), a project that runs programmes every year aimed at empowering young people to become the creative leaders and change makers of their communities.

Initially driven by a passion to make a real difference in the lives of young women, Zarka and her project partner, Sharnay, created and successfully launched the initiative ‘Sport with Support’. This initiative was designed to provide a safe, judgement-free space where girls could not only boost their self-esteem but also explore different sports, all while being mindful of their cultural and religious barriers that often limit young women’s access to physical activities as they get older.

The project when it was first launched (facilitated by educators at ActiveMe 360) saw huge success with girls in the local community  and Zarka was keen to continue the project for years to come.

Starting college in 2024, Zarka’s passion never wavered, and she explored how she could continue running ‘Sport with Support’ alongside her new timetable.  As a Social Enterprise, we were able to step in and provide the support and resources needed to continue facilitating the project on an ongoing basis.

‘Sport with Support’ is still very much Zarka’s project and she will continue to lead the direction and mission of every session, just under the ActiveMe 360 umbrella with our dedicated team behind her – working together to keep more girls active.
