Physical education and sports play a crucial role in the overall development and health and wellbeing of our children, and the PE & Sport Premium exists to enhance the physical activity and sports provision in primary schools.
In this blog, we will explore what the premium is and how schools can utilise the funding.
What is the PE & Sport Premium?
The PE & Sport Premium is a dedicated fund aimed at improving sports and physical education in primary schools. Its primary goal is to ensure that children can enjoy the benefits of quality physical education and increased physical activity.
Schools are allocated £16,000 of funding, along with an additional £10 per child to support these initiatives.
Key Indicators
The success of the PE & Sport Premium is closely monitored through 5 key indicators.
The 5 indicators are:

- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
- The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- Increased participation in competitive sport
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the PE & Sport Premium fund children to attend after school/wraparound care?
Absolutely! This funding can be used to provide equal opportunities for students by supporting their participation in after school and wraparound activities, it also provides the children with access to a range of sports and activities for them to try and experience.
Can the PE & Sport Premium be used for swimming programmes?
No, the funding can’t be used entirely for swimming education, as it is part of the core curriculum your primary swim funding should come from your core budget. However, the PE & Sport Premium can be used to provide additional support to children who have not met the curriculum criteria in swimming.
Can the PE & Sport Premium be used to enhance our school’s playground?
Yes, according to the new guidance, you can use the funding for maintaining ‘existing assets.’ For example, if your school’s playground has markings that need updating, this can be considered a maintenance cost. But you’re not able to add additional things to your playground.
When do schools need to publish their PE & Sport Premium report?
Schools are required to publish their PE & Sport Premium report on their website by the 31st of July 2024.
