PESSPA: Curriculum PE and School Sport

At ActiveMe 360, we believe PE should nurture the whole child. Our PESSPA approach blends structured lessons, competitive sport and fun physical activities to build physical, mental and social skills.

Overview

The aim and vision of our PESSPA approach are to inspire children, promote healthy lifestyles, and provide enriching sporting experiences that foster personal development and social skills. We recognise the importance of PESSPA in improving students’ life chances and overall well-being.

PESSPA is a comprehensive, strategic approach used in schools primarily in the UK to promote physical activity, health, and well-being among children. Physical Education (PE) refers to planned, progressive learning delivered during school time, focusing on activities like gymnastics and dance. School Sport involves structured learning beyond the curriculum, such as after-school clubs and competitions.

Our PESSPA approach blends structured lessons, competitive sport and fun physical activities to build physical, mental and social skills. We tailor sessions to every class and pupil, so every child feels confident, challenged and valued and we align it with our unique ActiveMe Way programme structure.

The ActiveMe Way

The ActiveMe Way is our proprietary EYFS–Year 6 development framework, turning physical activity into a structured, measurable journey across Physical, Mental, Social and Personal wellbeing. Through age-appropriate “I can…” goals and ACTIVES values, we help schools evidence personal development and wellbeing outcomes, while giving children ownership of real progress, not just participation.

Our Programme

Our ActiveMe Way led 360 PE programme is more than a set of lessons; it’s a complete approach to your school’s PE, school sport and physical activity (PESSPA) provision, delivered by a dedicated team of skilled staff who work collaboratively to ensure a whole school approach. Whether you need cover for teachers’ planning time (PPA) or a fresh curriculum, 360 PE can provide at least two hours of high-quality PE each week, aligned to your existing curriculum or delivered via our own specialist, curriculum-aligned scheme.

We build progression into every unit, so children continually develop fundamental and sport-specific skills. Our curriculum includes a variety of traditional and modern sports and games to keep students engaged and motivated. If you don’t yet have a curriculum, we’ll help you create one that motivates pupils and supports their physical, social and mental growth. Activities are differentiated to challenge different ability levels, supporting children through inclusive approaches. Engaging students in the planning of physical education activities fosters a sense of ownership and inclusivity. By addressing the whole spectrum of PESSPA, we support physical health, mental wellbeing, behaviour and resilience.

We develop a long-term plan for PESSPA, involving all stakeholders, and regularly reviewing it ensures the programme continues to meet the needs of students.

Physical education & academic success

Quality PE and regular physical activity aren’t just about fitness, they underpin academic achievement. Research shows that dedicating time in the school day to PE, school sport and physical activity can boost performance in subjects such as mathematics and reading by improving executive function, attention and memory. (Find out more about our physically active learning services here)

At the same time, participation in PE and sport builds teamwork, communication and resilience. Our programmes integrate physical activity throughout the day in ways that complement classroom learning, helping pupils approach challenges with confidence and develop the skills they need to thrive academically, socially and personally

Safe practice at ActiveMe 360

Safety is woven into every aspect of our PE, school sport and physical activity offer. We align with nationally recognised safe practice guidelines and support schools in conducting thorough risk assessments, establishing clear emergency procedures and ensuring up‑to‑date first aid and paediatric first aid training. By taking a proactive approach to safety, we help create an environment where staff and pupils feel confident and supported. We also work with schools to refine their own policies so everyone, teachers, pupils, partners and parents, know how to report and respond to incidents. Continuous training and collaboration mean that safe practice is embedded, not imposed
